"Works" Vol.l & ll, Green cover Harpers w/Clemm preface ??? year

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I have 2 books on Poe (passed down). They are green bookcover Harpers & Bros. publ.. There is a "Preface to the 1849 Edition" by Maria Clemm. I am curious to the actual published date of these 2 vols. as I suspect they have been in my family for some time. I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

I have many times, but unsuccessfully, tried to answer to you about your odd volumes. Some bug? Your incomplete set contains 10 volumes in all,and was not published before 1914. Many reprints till the end of the 1920s. More informations later, if you need. Yours sincerely, Raven's Shade (Belgium).

Since I see that today the bug seems to be away, here a little more. The "Harper & Bros" reprint of the classic Griswold 1850-56 posthumous edition of Poe's works (originally in 4 vols, Redfield, later Widdleton, &c.), appears in most of libraries' catalogues as published in 191? or 192?, and is effectively almost always undated. The fact that Woodberry did not include it in his minutely revised and up-dated 1914 bibliography (vol. X of his own edition of Poe's Works) implies that the first issue of this set must be not prior to late in 1914. Note that this set is the ultimate appearance of the complete Griswold corpus, as originally published (with some new distributions of matters, as well as some additions, unacknowledgedly "purloined" from the Ingram British 1874-5 and 1884 editions!), making thus the major interest of this late cheap unambitious multi-volumes edition of Poe's writings. Yours, Raven's Shade (Belgium).

I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THE EDGAR ALLAN POE 10 VOLUME HARPER SET TOO. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH THEY WOULD BE WORTH?

The Harpers set was printed about 1920. Even in fine condition it is not especially valuable. It is just another of many, many generic editions (most of which are in the 10-volume format). It is also printed on very cheap paper.
