Titanic Related: United Kingdom History

(titanŽik) , British liner that sank on the night of Apr. 14-15, 1912, after crashing into an iceberg in the N Atlantic S of Newfoundland. More than 1,500 lives were lost. The Titanic, thought to be the fastest ship afloat and almost unsinkable, was on her maiden voyage and carried many notables among the more than 2,200 persons aboard. These circumstances made the loss seem the more appalling to the public in England and the United States. Official and other investigations revealed that messages of warning had been sent but had either not been received by the commanding officers or had been ignored by them. The ship had continued at full speed even after the warnings were sent. She did not carry sufficient lifeboats, and many of the lifeboats were launched with only a few of the seats occupied. Other vessels in the vicinity were unable to reach the Titanic before she sank; one, only 10 mi (16 km) away, did not respond because her wireless operator had retired for the evening. The disaster did have some good effects in bringing about measures to promote safety at sea, particularly the establishment of a patrol to make known the location of icebergs and stringent regulations about the proper number and proper equipment of lifeboats to be carried by vessels. The catastrophe inspired a large literature. An expedition led by Robert D. Ballard discovered the wreck in 1985.

I was wondering where Titanic sank. I'm doing a project in Science (mystery) and need to know. The project is to advertise (not really) for people to join you. You have to say where you think treasure to bury. Thanks so much, feel free to e-mail me about it!

Today is the 91st Anniversary of the sinking. Tonight the Titanic will scrap the iceberg, tomorrow early morning it will sink. God bless all those who lost their lives and bless the familys and friends of those los

Rose wasn't a real person. her and jack were made up for the story! James Cameron wanted to add to characters who fall in love and to loose each other to make the audience feel for all the people who lost thier lives, and hey, it worked!!!

How can anyone not know when the Titanic sank. Anyone can read a book and see it sank On April 15, 1912 at 2:20 a.m. after it hit a iceberg on her starboard side. The first 5 compartments were flooded and no ship was within reach of saving her in time.

-- Michael Bablick (dustyark@hotmail.com), March 10, 2004.

the titanic sank on April 15, 1912 at 2:20a.m. with 5 compartments full of water. But one thing I would like to know from every one here is what part of the movie titanic (1997) did you like if any.

Thank-you for answering the question and reading this letter!

I know for a fact that the Titanic went down on the 15th of april 1912. She struck the iceberg a little after 11.30 on the 14th, the pumps gave the titanic more time than what was predicted in the movie.

-- Daniel Maher (dmaherishere@hotmail.com), April 16, 2004.

The Titanic left Southampton on Wednesday 10th of April 1912 after the Good Friday on the 5th. She arrived at Cherbourgand about 7pm that evening, finally arriving at Queenstown the following afternoon. She then had 3 days of transatlantic crossing reciving numerable ice warnings, many not getting to the bridge and one found later by the American inquiry to have been in Bruce Ismay's pocket (Managing Director of the White Star Line - owners of the Titanic). At about 11:40 on the 14th of April, the Sunday, the lookouts Fredrick Feet and Reganald Lee sighted an Iceburg, to which scraped along the starboard side of the ship. In 2 hours and 40 minutes the ship slowly sank, getting faster toward the end, finally going down at about 2:20am Monday April 15th. After the rescue of the survivors (705) Carpathia turned for New York, arriving on the 17th.

Here's One For you History Buffs Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.

But as we know....the great ship did not make it to New York....The ship hit an iceberg and sank....and the cargo was forever lost .

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th.... and is known....of course....as

.

.

.

.... Sinko de Mayo....
