A photo of SCL E6 501 in black/yellow in Denver, CO as sole unit on an SL consist showed up in our ABPR archive today, thought some of the members might be interested in seeing the shot.

If anyone can shed light on this you might want to drop jkherr@centurytel.net a line to let him know.

Did Amtrak use any SCL E6 units?

If memory serves me right, there was a feature piece on the restoration of this unit in Passenger Train Journal back in the mid- 80s. The unit was shown on the cover pulling a train in Wisconson, and I recall the first herald spelled Virginia, Virgina.

it is not quite the same color, i have seen it in person and it is too red of a color, dare I say ALMOST garnet... they did a nice job restoring it, its a shame that they couldnt do a better job finding a paint match however

The 501 was built as an E3 (as was sister 500). It was later listed as an E6, I believe due to internal electrical upgrades if memory serves. This is the same unit that was in Wisconsin for many years, owned by Glenn Monhart, after its stint at Denver. After Monhart's death the NC Transportation Museum at Spencer acquired the unit. Monhart had the 501 painted in the original purple scheme while he owned it. The scheme is very close to authentic although the purple is a bit reddish and the nose herald is too small.

Amtrak leased a few E7s in its early days, including 5 ex-SCL E7s. These E7s had a "5" added in front of their original number while in Amtrak service, for example SCL 543 became 5543.

So is it an E6 or E3? Was the ACL E3 the one which was in Wisconsin for a while? Gets hard to keep track of E units and what paint they are wearing after a while.

I didn't think Amtrak kept anything but E8's, but I believe they leased an E7 or two for a while.

I saw this in living color when in Denver for some training while an officer in the USAF. Hooked up to the Denver Zephyr trainset. I forget the guy who owned all this stuff at one time, but the Zephyr went to Saudi Arabia and the E6 eventually went to Historic Spencer Shops, Spencer, NC, where it has been returned to it's full, regal, ACL purple & silver.

To my knowledge, of the E units nothing older than E8's were sent on to Amtrak.
