Was Bob Ballard Portrayed in the Movie?

The movie begins with a portrayal of a guy who is out only to make a buck off the wreckage. Not a nice guy at all.

here's the odd thing: He's wearing a Bob Ballard cap. In fact, i thought at first it was supposed to BE Ballard.

At the end of the movie, I read the credits, expecting that the one man who has had more involvement with the Titanic than anyone - Bob Ballard - would certainly show up in the prodigious credits as consultant, or at least a "Thanks to" (they thanked everyone else under the sun). But no. Apparantly he had no input whatsoever into the movie. Odder still.

What's the story? Was there a riff, or a difference of opinion? Were the producers sticking it to him with the Bob Ballard cap on the unsavory character at the begining?

Having seen both James Cameron and Bob Ballard together on "Larry King Live", I'm sure there isn't any animosity between them.
