His unique and pioneering place in American and world literature, his genius and popular appeal. His artistry and theories in short lyric poetry and the short story. The creation of the modern detective story. His contribution to literary criticism, to magazine writing. As the above suggests there is more to Poe than a simple reading, though his simple and popular forms make him deceptively accessible.Being one of our best and most controversial poets even up to today alone merits a primacy of place in our studies and appreciation.
