January 11, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Republicans yesterday released a national poll that says Americans back President Bush's $674 billion tax cut plan by a huge margin and prefer it to the rival Democratic proposal.

The poll was released after Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle blasted the plan as "obscene," although privately some Democrats admit Bush likely will get most of what he wants.

In all, 61 percent of Americans back the Bush plan - which was described in great detail in the question - and only 34 percent oppose it, according to the Jan. 7-9 poll of 800 registered voters, by the GOP firm Public Opinion Strategies.

A rival Democratic plan for smaller tax cuts, also described in great detail, also had strong support but by a smaller margin of 55 to 38 percent. When asked to choose between the two, the Bush plan was favored by an 11-point majority.

Bush Tax Proposal Frustrates Left Posted Jan. 10, 2003

Liberals and Democrats have attacked President George W. Bush's tax-cut proposals with the frenetic angst of a mole with the Botts. Few have been more hyperbolic than the New York Times, which presented the Moorhead family of Austin, Texas, in a 51-square-inch photo as victims who called the Bush plan "unimpressive." On Friday the Washington Times nailed the New York paper by actually calculating the Moorheads' taxes. Savings under Bush for this hardworking family of five? A cool $4,000 a year.
