Alcohol and only alcohol. Any medicinal abuses are unknown and unlikely except for a false suicide attempt with laudanum. A more intersting figure for studying abuse can be found quite easily. Poe's addiction was at the point of one drink and he was hughly affected. One documented case of the DT's as reported by Poe(not very inspirational to his writing either).

This is part of the ongoing "legend" and popular(i.e. lazily and calumnous) assumption Poe was tagged with by his enemies- right after his death of course. Cowardly calumny is thus rightly demonstrated to be one of the seven deadly sins and high on the literary list of crimes too.

No, No, No

Please read with care some Poe's novels like "The Cask of Amontilado"

Never, yeah never an addicted personnality ( with alcohol, or other drugs) could imagine or write such a "tastefull" wine story nor analyse each plot's character.

Do not mix up a person who drank some times "to much" with an "alcoholic or addicted" personnality.

So could you be so kind to erase -for once- the word "alcohol" and more promptly the worse words "only alcohol" from Poe's biography.

Yours faithfully

actually, i am doing a thesis on poe. accordingg to all of my research, poe used opium (methanphetamins) and drank, as for poe being a druggie, i think u need to do your research.

You have to figure that Poe would not have done crack as a previous message indicated. Crack is a "refined" drug of current society, not a readily available drug of the early 19th century.

As for the comment about Poe not being an alcoholic, this is a matter of relativity. How much must a person drink to be defined as an alchoholic. Generally, alcoholism is defined as an addiction beyond a person's control. The person "must have" a drink and cannot stop himself (herself). Could Poe have been an alcoholic and still written "The Cask...?" Sure! Any addict has a sort of love-hate bond with the source of the addiction.

Didn't he do absinthe?

He did Cocaine,opium,laudnum,and drank alchohol.

He frequently references the aroma produced by opium in his stories.

He did drugs and alchohol infrequently but in large amounts.

he was a crack head

Someone already mentioned this, but it looks like it needs to be mentioned again. Poe did not do crack. Or cocaine. Or any of its other derivitaves. Nor could he have done heroine. Those are all refined drugs, and if they were even possible to get back then, it would have been damn near impossible and damn expensive to get your hands on them. I also highly doubt he did absinthe, but I wont say its impossible. Just, thats fairly hard to get your hands on too, and would probably be damn expensive as well. And look at Poe, he was damn poor most of his life, why would he go that far out of his way just to get his hands on some drugs, when his old friend the bottle is right around the corner? Poe was an alcoholic. I don't know if he did any drugs, though if he did its very likely it was opium. But he most deffinatly did not do crack.

Poe prefered slammers or irish carbombs. He also enjoyed an occasional jagermeister. His favorite was by far gin and tonic.
