Snow Removal Equipment

I finally called Finch Services of Westminster, MD (410.848.7211). I spoke with Bob Green. Below is a summary of prices Bob gave me over the phone.

The 355D is able to use suitcase weights, in addition to wheel weights. The suitcase weights hang off the rear and are supposed to be better than wheel weights. The weights are 42 lbs. and cost $35 a piece. He suggested 4 weights. $140

A set of chains cost $90.

An additional set of rims for the rear including bar tires would cost around $250.

The 48" Blade cost $515. Another $45 for the lift kit and $25 for the mounting kit. The minimum cost is therefore $585. There is also another kit which allows the blade to be angled from the seat. This will cost another $125, for a total of $710. There is also an optional rubber squeegee kit for another $100. This brings the total to $810. Add in the weights and chains, which would be necessary for pushing snow, and the minimum cost would be about $1040.

The 42" single stage snow thrower is $1249. Another $45 for the lift kit and $35 for the mounting kit. Total cost is $1329. Probably would NOT need chains in this configuration, but would need the weights. Add another $140 to the cost. Total $1469.

Over the last months since I purchased the blade, I somehow managed to twist the blade. I sent some digital photographs to Scott Braun at Finch Services in Westminster. On March 6th, a Deere representative was at Finches and looked at the pictures. Scott called me and said the rep wants to inspect the blade. I removed the blade on Saturday morning and Finches will pick it up Monday morning.

On the phone, Scott made it sound like I would probably get a new blade, but he did not come out and say it.

This past Saturday, the 18th, I purchased the 48" blade from Finch Services in Westminster. I paid $585 plus tax. I drove up there and picked it up. I spent the better part of both days getting it assembled and properly installed. Dave Alban came over on Sunday morning to give me a hand. Finally got it all installed and working. What a good feeling. I am still waiting on the lug tires to arrive. I still have not been able to drive the tractor with the blade because of the flat.

Well, I purchased 5 of these weights from the John Deere dealer in Eldersburg and am happy to report they all fit on the back of my tractor. For future reference, they are each 2.5" wide and the weight bracket on the 355D is 12.75" (inner dimension). This leaves about .25" when done.

This morning, I went to Tractor Supply Company to look for tires and tubes. The front tires for my John Deere are 16 x 6.50 - 8 and the back tires are 23 x 10.50 - 12. They do not carry the Carlisle Super Lugs for this specific tractor rim, but they can be ordered. I should be getting a phone call next Monday or Tuesday with a price quote for the front and rear.

Today I called Finch Services of Eldersburg and W.L. Sterners in PA about the blade. All three places have given me the same exact price of $585 on the blade, mounting kit and lifting kit. There appears to be no wiggle room.

The guy at Sterner's told me that he uses a blade with suitcase weights and bar tires and he does allright.
