COULD Gov. Pataki become Sen. Pataki? The gov is said to be bored in Albany and considering challenging Sen. Hillary Clinton in 2006, sources say. He'd keep away his chief rival for the Republican nomination, Rudy Giuliani, by promising to support him for governor. Defeating Clinton will be a high priority for the GOP in 2006 to derail her hopes of running for president in 2008. But some political insiders dismiss the Pataki-for-Senate speculation as ridiculous and predict that he'll be less popular in coming years because of the state's fiscal crisis. "He wants to get out of Albany before then and get to Washington," said one source. "He'd love to replace Dick Cheney as vice president."
