[Some very kind folks from this forum donated money to the APS when I was bitten by a large gray-striped squirrel. Thought you'd like to know what's going on over there.]

Pet project to help shelter animals

DURHAM -- A terrier with a broken leg gave a break of another sort to the Animal Protection Society of Durham recently.

Lyn Proctor, a longtime APS member, was visiting the shelter when she saw the dog and asked why it hadn’t been treated.

"They said they didn’t have the proper facilities or equipment," she said. "I just saw an opportunity there to help out."

On Jan. 8, that opportunity comes full circle, when the APS opens its new medical center. The clinic, a white cinderblock suite that will be used for shelter animals only, is located behind the Durham County Animal Shelter at 2117 E. Club Blvd.

Few animal shelters in North Carolina have their own clinics. Until now, the APS has paid a mobile clinic to spay and neuter adopted animals out in the parking lot and has taken animals that needed other kinds of care to area veterinarians.

Having an on-site clinic will cut sterilization costs in half, said Julia Wing, development director. The APS will pump the savings into health care, staffing and new programs to keep relationships with adopters going after they walk out the door with their new pets, Wing said.

Proctor, administrator for leased properties at Duke University Medical Center, lined up an army of supporters.

From Richard Rahija, Duke’s director of laboratory animal resources, she got surplus steel cages and other equipment. From friend Gary Hock, a general contractor, and his subcontractors, she got labor and materials -- and in Hock’s case, a cash donation. Remainder

OK Git, your turn. Do you swear and otherwise certify, under pains and penalties of squirrel bites, that the aforementioned squirrel is okeydokey or nokey?

There are so many cats on my computer as of this morning my whole orientation has been thrown into doubt!

Would you mind pointing out which one it is? Or should I send all of them northward and let BrookS sort em out?

It's the one with the ginger kitty painting on the wall. The squirrel is stretched out in the basket. Butter wouldn't melt. Ha! My arse!
