SSG P4

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

Greetings

I am looking at a SSG P4 with nightforce NSX 3.5-15x50 Mill dot scope. Its top shelf so it has a high price to match. I originally looked at the P2 but moved over to the P4 for a few reasons. I know the shorter 16" barrel is not going to be as accurate over longer ranges but how less accurate is it over the 20" or 26" barrels ???

Any thoughts on SSG P2 or P4 also Nightforce NSX scopes?

Thanks for any help

The P-4 is a more valuable rifle and I will tell you why. The barrel is threaded on as opposed to being press fit like the rest of the SSG series. Also, be aware that the P-4 has a 9.something twist rate to stabilize heavy subsonic loads. Might shoot standard loads, might not.

I'd take the P4 and shoot out to 350 meters, and thats about it. A shorter barrel doesnt degrade accuracy, just the trajectory of the bullet sucks. Your gonna lose about 500- 700 meters range with a 16 inch barrel. If you using a suppressor full time, then happy hunting, but if your still wanting the range, stick with a longer barrel.

Thanks Tom.

This weapon will work in the sub 300m ranges, the main reason for the shift to the P4 over the P2 was its shorter length and the ability for mounting a suppressor as required. Any suppressed work would generally be under 150m.

Some of my hunting is done at night, m/blast is always a problem in the wee small hours so suppressed fire is a keen option.

This outfit will compliment my Sako TRG ( my main long range outfit )

I know the trajectory will suffer, about 150’ p/s will be lost from initial velocity, but the shorter length will allow me to swing this thing like my 45 lever action in the scrub, but still allow for longer shots over open country if required.

There is always a trade off somewhere, I should be looking for a single outfit with interchangeable barrel lengths!

The P2 and the P4 are the same money, about $1100 US, all up this outfit with scope, 10 round and 5 round mags, PH bi pod and case is about $ 2400 US.

My TRG was that much just for the rifle!

Thanks again for your thoughts Tom.

Tony.

it shouldnt be any less accurate, but the trajectory will suffer bad. unless youre not planning on shooting very far, id either get the PIIK or a custom Rem.. the PIIK will be a lot less, and can still reach 1k, and a custom job for the price of the PIV will be far superior.
