How to get started?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Doula.Com General Discussion : One Thread

Hi! I have just moved to a small town and I want to get started on my certification requirements. I do not know the doctors in this town or any childbirth educators. I think this is a great time to get things started because the hospital here does not have a birthing suite and they are breaking ground for that addition as we speak. The town I live in however is VERY conservative. ("Bible belt" area) Any ideas on how to introduce myself? Lots of people know me and believe in me in my hometown so this is a new challenge for me. I have 2 sons of my own ages 6 & 3. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have contacted other doulas in larger areas about 45mins from me with no response at all. Thanks again. Happy Holidays! Lisa

Hello, you could contact a planned parenthood facility where you could get hooked up with a mom who may have little support. Maybe you could make an in person visit to a facility. Or you could contact another doula in the area and ask if you could shadow her.
