It was raining now it's snowing...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Current News - Homefront Preparations : One Thread

The weathermen had predicted that the rain, which started last night, would turn to snow before the morning. When I woke at 5am, it was still raining. About an hour and a half ago, it changed over to snow. I have been treated to some of the largest snow flakes I have ever seen.

Currently, I have about 1 1/2 inches and no end in sight. The predictions have gone from 4-6" to 8-10". At this rate, I'd be surprised if we didn't get a foot of snow! Oh yeah, it is thunder snow too. I've seen a couple of flashed of lightening. Stunning!

Wish I could toss a snowball to everyone, with love of course.

Sounds wonderful, especially knowing that you will safe and sound in your home.

Congrats on the White Christmas!

Lucky dog !!!! I am so jealous. The grass is still showing through the half inch or so that we have in central MI.

Green, green, green over your white! What is it they say about thunder snow--it means you'll have snow again within, um, two weeks? Three?

Is this the same snow that is arriving in New England on Wednesday??

-- Anonymous, December 23, 2002

After giving apoc a motherly admonition to avoid shoveling snow ... I went out and TRIED to shovel this stuff. It's the wettest, heaviest snow I've ever seen.

You guys and your snow! I realize you want to share it with us in Miami but when it gets here it's just rain and so our Christmas Eve and Day are gonna be wet.

Of course this is from the weatherman so it may not actually happen.

We have rain from the same system but there will be no snow. And no bloody ice, either!!!

Hope everyone is enjoying the lovely scenery and staying off the roads.

Helen, be careful out there!

Git, what do you mean "just rain"???? We're going to be slammed tomorrow with the stuff that YOU (now *there's* a surprise!) are shipping up here. At some point soon I need to decide whether I will be visiting Mother in the nursing home this afternoon instead of tomorrow morning.

Go today, Brooks. I imagine this'll be a humdinger of a storm. The pilots have been spraying the skies for the last few days. The last time they sprayed this much, we had all those tornados (November!!)

My little cat is going from whinning about food to hiding behind the piano -- a sure sign of a major storm -- her dish is nowhere near empty and she had some leftover meatload with me this morning as a treat.

BrookS, you missed out on the ice storm so don't complain about a bit of snow. However, I note that some sort of low is forming off the coast and will be headed your way--it's the NC version of coal :-)

Helen,

After getting onto me about shoveling snow, I come in here and read that you did it. GRRRRRR!

Actually, yesterday after it finished snowing, I got the snow shovel and went outside to do the dirty task, as hubby is in NO shape for such movements. Indeed, the snow at that time was very heavy. I didn't shovel it, but just pushed it along. Never once did I actually lift any.

I got the front walk, the driveway where we park, and the side porch clear and free of snow. However, soon after it started to sleet just a bit. That didn't last long thank goodness.

Sometime over night, it started to snow again. It is currently snowing. I'm not going to waste my energy shoveling again until it quits.

I walked around the property and took a few pictures. I can tell that the deer have been out looking for food, as their tracks lead directly to where we feed them. After I warm up a bit, I'll take a couple of 25 lb bags of corn and spread it out for them. I did hear a few wild turkey calling each other.

Yesterday, I spent a good portion of the day making cookies. The ones that I like best are a lemon thumbprint. Sausage balls maybe later on today, who knows. I just want to relax a bit and enjoy the beauty that is around me.

I have tons of birds coming to the feeder to eat, including two different kinds of woodpeckers. I can sit and watch the birds for hours. Apparently the snow has brought the squirrels out in force, as I see them everywhere (at least when I have the dogs up). They are fat little boogers this year, so I suppose the acorns were in bumper supply. Thus far they have left the bird feeders alone. I'll play with the squirrels later on, by letting the dogs out (and calling them in and letting them out... I'm so bad!)

The ducks are swimming in the pond and there were a couple of very beautiful grey cranes down there. I couldn't get close enough to take a picture as they all would have taken flight.

For you all in warmer weather, I toss a snowball at you so that you can enjoy it with me. Currently it is 22 with wind chills anywhere from 0-10 above.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

definitely enjoying reading about it! thanks!

You can have the snow shoveling. I'm making inroads in new ways to procrastinate about mopping the floors. And doing the windows, and bathrooms, etc.

they just upped my area to 13 inches by tomorrow, then additiona; 3-5 from lake effect on the back side of the storm! we're hunkered down!

SAR -- you won't be moving for a week! (;

Barefoot, just keep it up, and I'm make sure that you get transferred to Marquette, MI! (where snow in MAY is not unheard of!)

OK, took care of seeing Mom this afternoon. She liked all the presents (although she was a bit unclear on the concept that they were for her).

The forecast of 8 to 12 inches has been increased to a solid foot, and I'm expecting it to be a very heavy 12 inches (not sure why).

Talked to my neighbor and I think I have his friend lined up to do the plowing. Hope so, or I may not make it to work on Thursday.

Boo hoo, I haven't had a white Christmas for nearly 30 years. I don't think they get many in Charleston, either! Oh well, maybe I'll get lucky.

-- Anonymous, December 24, 2002

Be very careful what you wish for, OG! (;

I think we got ten inches. About three inches melted and another seven stayed on the ground. The kids stayed outside sledding for hours. They wore the snow off the driveway hill fairly quickly. It's a sign of okie entertainment values that hubby and I were out there putting more snow ON the driveway for the kids. Then I hit on the idea of letting them sled into the pond.

The animals are lowing and keeping me awake.

Now that I've scared you all to death, I might as well tell you the pond has been dry for years. >;P

Merry Christmas!

we suspect the front will stall in the middle of the state for a while and make Christmas Day grey and wet. Hope we're wrong. We were looking forward to having the windows open all day, with a high of 75 and the plan is to eat on the patio.

Weatherman says the rain and clouds will clear in the morning and sunshine and blue skies the rest of the day. too much to hope for, we think.

It's 0330 and I'm awake because a sodding thunderstorm woke me up. It's Christmas Day, for gawd's sake, it ain't right!

Btw, we exchange presents Christmas Eve around here. We had a ten-dollar limit this year and it had to be bought at Big Lots. Usually it's $20 but that was too easy. Anyway, Sweetie cheated and got me $12.00 worth: a cordless screwdriver (because I'm always misplacing the one I have--now I have two to misplace) and an 11-pund scale for posting stuff to my cousin. Why it's 11 and not 10 or 12, I don't know, but this is Big Lots. Maybe it's a converted four kilo scale? Him? I got him an auto gift set, thingies for organizing the visor, a CD holder and I forget what the other thing is for. And a press-out Blue Angels plane kit (.50 from Grannie's--I cheated too). Then I gave him his big present--a month's expenses in SC and he gave me mine--a mortgage payment. Teehee.

Merry Christmas, y'all!!!

helen, I'm remembering a Sunday cartoon where the guy, resting on his snow shovel, is explaining to the neighborhood kids that they can't use just any snow for their snowmen, they have to use high quality driveway snow.

Well, it did rain good this morning, and so far the day is looking real good.

We opened the windows, which means I don't have to clean them, LOL.

Now, someone explain to me why my christmas presents have a theme of car washing? I have polishing mitts, chamies and a cordless brush on telescopic handle. Me, with a wonderful brushless car wash just down the street! LOL

As a gag gift, I bought SO a Travel John, because of all the traffic going to and from work. heh heh

Other things include clothes, a giant sausage, and a gold bracelet.

Merry Christmas! Stay safe all!
