How did Poe successfully use the Unity of Effect technique in "The Masque of the Red Death" in charaters, theme and setting?

The faraway fantasy setting is highlighted best by having this tale told in the third person in an almost allegory fable form. Thus the setting, plot and characters all have the same remote value, share the same color, emotional value and meaning. The architecture and colors lined up like the medieval dance of death with Death at the end is inhabited with people madly trying to deny Death while cavorting frantically, stopped each hour by the dread chiming of the clock, despair always having the final word. The raging Prospero, his fantastic palace, like his own arrogant and artiistic mind confronts death, but like Usher, his own palace foreshadows and contains his destruction.
