Poe is considered the "Father" of a detective story and all the rest in the previous answer. He also developed the theory of short story writing. According to Poe, a short story should consist of

1. A story that is short enough to be read in one sitting. (Meaning that you could read it all sitting down without getting distracted) 2. All elements if the story should work to achieve a single effect. (A single effect would be the climax of the story)
