Anxiety Disorders Abound

Do you experience excessive anxiety on a regular basis? And does this anxiety interfere with your daily life? You may be one of 19 million Americans suffering from an anxiety disorder. There are five major categories, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Or a person may suffer from a specific phobia, such as a fear of snakes.

The good news is, according to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (AADA), anxiety disorders are highly treatable with psychosocial therapies, medication or both. If you think you may be suffering from one of these disorders (discussed in more detail in upcoming tips), please consult a healthcare professional.

Anxiety Disorders: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

In our last tip, we mentioned that there are five different categories of anxiety disorders from which an estimated 19 million Americans suffer, one of which is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (AADA):

GAD is characterized by excessive, unrealistic worry that lasts six months or more; in adults, the anxiety may focus on issues such as health, money, or career. In addition to chronic worry, GAD symptoms include trembling, muscular aches, insomnia, abdominal upsets, dizziness, and irritability.

If you think you may be suffering from GAD, please consult a healthcare professional.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Previously, we mentioned that there are five different categories of anxiety disorders from which an estimated 19 million Americans suffer, one of which is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (AADA):

In OCD, individuals are plagued by persistent, recurring thoughts (obsessions) that reflect exaggerated anxiety or fears; typical obsessions include worry about being contaminated or fears of behaving improperly or acting violently. The obsessions may lead an individual to perform a ritual or routine (compulsions) -- such as washing hands, repeating phrases or hoarding -- to relieve the anxiety caused by the obsession.

If you think you may be suffering from OCD, please consult a healthcare professional.

Anxiety Disorders: Panic Disorder

Previously, we mentioned that there are five different categories of anxiety disorders from which an estimated 19 million Americans suffer, one of which is Panic Disorder. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (AADA):

People with panic disorder suffer severe attacks of panic-which may make them feel like they are having a heart attack or are going crazy-for no apparent reason. Symptoms include heart palpitations, chest pain or discomfort, sweating, trembling, tingling sensations, feeling of choking, fear of dying, fear of losing control, and feelings of unreality. Panic disorder often occurs with agoraphobia, in which people are afraid of having a panic attack in a place from which escape would be difficult, so they avoid these places.

If you think you may be suffering from Panic Disorder, please consult a healthcare professional.

Anxiety Disorders: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Previously, we mentioned that there are five different categories of anxiety disorders from which an estimated 19 million Americans suffer, one of which is Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (AADA):

PTSD can follow an exposure to a traumatic event such as a sexual or physical assault, witnessing a death, the unexpected death of a loved one, or natural disaster. There are three main symptoms associated with PTSD: "reliving" of the traumatic event (such as flashbacks and nightmares); avoidance behaviors (such as avoiding places related to the trauma) and emotional numbing (detachment from others); and physiological arousal such difficulty sleeping, irritability or poor concentration.

If you think you may be suffering from PTSD, please consult a healthcare professional.

Anxiety Disorders: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)

Previously, we mentioned that there are five different categories of anxiety disorders from which an estimated 19 million Americans suffer, one of which is Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of America (AADA):

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is characterized by extreme anxiety about being judged by others or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or ridicule. This intense anxiety may lead to avoidance behavior. Physical symptoms associated with this disorder include heart palpitations, faintness, blushing and profuse sweating.

If you think you may be suffering from SAD, please consult a healthcare professional.

Hi Old Git! Thought I might get bumped on the head for being away for so long. :^) Thanks for the welcome back. The kitties are great, how are yours? Have you moved yet? I still check the quakes every day.

I still the air mattress. I haven't had any problems with it other then trying to have my own space on it. I never know where one of the cats will be, she moves around.I don't really care to wake up and she is nose to nose with me on the pillow.....alergies galore!

Thanks Barefoot for the hot links.
