"Annabel Lee" is one of my favorite works by Poe. It is a meaningful poem that shows how much one person can love another, even if that person may have passed. It also shows the grief and suffering someone goes through when a love is lost. When you lose someone no one else may understand the love you have had for that other human being. I think Poe is trying to underline this idea in the poem as well.

There is a dark element, a note of horror in that the rebellion of the bereaved heart lies down by the sepulcher, defeated and still gripping death by the throat because he simply cannot, will not be separated from his love or her memory- yet he is and she no longer exists corporeally in any way.

That famous poster of the frog being swallowed by the stork strangling his throat seems to me part of this otherwise moving declaration of love.

Sorry. Documents. Mabbbott's book on Edgar Allan Poe's poems(available in bookstores still) describes the origins and history of the poem very well, the sources, inspirations and attritubtion controversy as to whom the poem is directed.
