why is alienation (social, actual, emotional and spiritual detachment) a recurring theme in so many works in the 18thC to the present?

We can see the theme of isolation in Young Goodman Brown, The Minister's Black Veil, Bartleby, The Gentle Lena, That evening sun... Does someone have any inputs on the topic?

Summarizing centuries of history? In peacetime and in times of huge progress and change the status quo is strained and traditional values do not speak to this. But the reliance on those traditions for purely structural support does more than irritate the sincere and energetic mind. Discord between the safe and contented(the powerful) and the spirit of man wisely seeing great dangers and losses.
