EZ Pass

greenspun.com : LUSENET : zipcar : One Thread

I've been using Zipcar for a few months now and the service is great. One question that I do have is how come the cars do not come with EZ Pass? It would be easy enough to track usage via EZ Pass own web site and assign the cost to the invoice. This would be a great time saver for members.

They will! We're adding EZ Pass to all our NY cars. Look for an announcement by the end of the year. Any toll charges during your reservation will appear on your bill, albeit somewhat delayed.

No, we don't plan to put passes in the Boston cars at this time. The EZ Passes in NY have been well received, but have also caused some problems for our operations folks and for our members. Before we expand this program we need to address these problems.

I hope there will be a way to turn the ezpass off in the zipcars because I have my own ezpass I use for when I rent, borrow or zip cars with the car pool feature enabled to get additional discounts.

Be careful using ezpass in rental cars. You must actually go to the ezpass website and register the license plate of your rental car before you use it for that car. I was ticketed because I used ezpass with a car I had rented and didn't register.

Actually, that's one of the major advantages of EZPass over the FastLane tags we have up here in Massachusetts (which work on identical technology and are otherwise useable anywhere EZPass is used)--the EZPass tags *are* fully transferable between vehicles of the same type without having to let them know about it (i.e. auto to auto, but not auto to truck). From http://www.ezpass.com/faq.shtml, "Q. Can I use my tag in other vehicles? A. Yes, you may transfer a tag between vehicles as long as they are of the same vehicle class. There are penalties for using a tag in a different vehicle class."

The only potential pitfall is if for some reason the tag doesn't read, they won't have any record that the car is assigned to an EZPass tag, and will try to charge you the "administrative fee" for failure to pay the toll.

I've actually been using ezpass for over 2 years now and have never been ticketed for an unregistered license plate. We originally registered the tag under my mother-in-law's car but nowadays we never borrow her car and exclusively rent or zip cars. We've never had any problems or penalty fees charged (knock on wood) while using other cars but thanks for the heads up.

Roy Will the Boston cars also come with Fast Lane passes soon, please? Michelle

I'd be happy if, at the least, all ZipCars had the Velcro on the windshield so I could attach my own EZPass!

Any update on the EZ-Pass situation? We'd benefit from adding them to the cars in Washington, DC too (anyone who's used the Dulles Toll Road knows of what I speak!). Thanks.

With NY EZ Pass you have to register the car and also unregister the car. NJ and DE photo the license plate. I had a rental car on my account and had $25 in tolls that were charged to me simply because I had the license on my account.
