DURHAM, N.C. -- Lingering effects from the recent winter weather caused tempers to heat up Friday, when Durham police were called to keep the peace when the crowd at a gas station got a little rowdy.

Customers at a Durham gas station were fuming after waiting in long lines to get fuel.

Dozens of cars lined up for hours at a BP gas station to get fuel. Cars stretched down the road to the intersection of Highway 70 near 15-501.

Cars tried to approach the gas station from every direction, but there was nowhere to go.

"I think it's horrible, unbelievable. People are driving like crazy," driver Pamela Bowman said.

Some people abandoned their cars and simply stood in line with gas cans.

"I've been here since 8 a.m. It's maddening. Thank God, I'm at the pump now, so I'm happy," driver Marlene Moses said.

People reportedly used just about everything to fill their tanks ranging from gas containers, milk jugs and even 2-liter bottles of Sprite.
