Well, the guy rapped on the wall but does not blame himself for provoking the cry but assigns it to the "craft" of the cat in bringing about his destruction. The demonic cry signals his doom of course, the red mouth and the red eye also standing for Hell. Opening up the wall, opening up the mouth of hell and torment. As in The Tell Tale Heart the murderer gives his personified betraying conscience a lot of help and wallows more in horror and amazement than in guilt, blaming the cat.
