I heard Poe's last words were:"I wish to God someone would blow my damn brains out." Is this true? Did he go to a hospital after found unconcious on the street in Baltimore?

Last words are always a "must". Most of them therefore are fabricated and Poe's were no exception. Unfortunately the attendant doctor kept embellishing these dicta to an absurdly sentimental degree on his lucrative lecture circuit. Thanks to him no one can be sure that he said much at all. The brief period of lucidity before the end MAY have contained the very normal headache statement.

He was found propped up in an inn and brought to the hospital.

There is extensive information that strongly suggests that poe died of rabies and rumor has it that his last words were "God have pity on my poor soul" his last words were evidence of rabies in the fact that alcoholism does not clear up then become worse and his words were spoken during a brief period of clarity from delirium.

I've been doing some research into the subject, and the general consesus is that he was found in an alcoholic state of stupor in a gutter in Baltimore, where someone recognized him and took him to a hospital. He woke up, screamed, "God help my soul!" and died. Apparently, men had gotten the alcoholic Poe drunk (Poe thought it was lemonade) and kept him voting for a certain candidate in the town election again and again until he just fell over and they abondoned him.

Poe's last words were "Lord help my poor soul." He did not die of alcoholism. Doctors concurred on the autopsy there was no scent of alcohol on his breath or body. He was found on the streets ragged and delerious. He died in the hospital. Doctors have still not found the reason for Edgar Allan Poe's death.
