Definitely advanced the popular cause of American literature in magazines especially and the hit "The Raven". Raised Gothic to its American pinnacle of high art. His influence was focussed and intended so for the world of letters. His representation of the Southern region could not natch the power of the Eastern establishment and what Poe decried was the lack of general education down south. I think he personifies, but does not create, a split in American culture that continues today in different ways, between the "meaning" and academic gatekeeper, commercial publisher shortsidenedness domination and the creative freedom, popularity and quality artists. (I guess my prejudices are showing there.)Without Poe perhaps no one in the world would see this split as easily and creativity would be even more stifled.
