Combination of stress, ill health, and perhaps a kidnapping by a vote fraud press gang who plied him with drink and forced him to go from precinct to precinct voting all night under different guises. His change into strange cheap clothes is one good clue for that theory. Obviously no one came forward among such scoundrels to take credit for effectively murdering a revered poet. {Poe gave no details if he could remember any. He was supposed to have been going home to another city when last seen.

I recently visited Poe's grave in Baltimore Maryland not sure about his death but i noticed pennies lying all about his headstone..I would like to know what the pennies mean,i know that when he died the children collected pennies to place at his grave..I will add if you ever get to Baltimore the westminster church is a must see,they actually built the church over top of the graveyard so that the graves would not be harmed,you can actually look under the church and see headstones everywhere,very cool place!!

The idea that Poe died and was a alcoholic is a a myth. Yes he drank and yes he did drugs, but the drugs he took were for pain. He was not an alcohol so alcoholism couldnt be why, and the rabies theory does not hold up medically. His wife had not recently died, it was two years after. My theory is that he had a form of the same disease many of his loved ones died from, tuberculosis. Possibly a form that effected the brain. But who knows, I'm prolly wrong.
