From what I am studying, Edgar Allan Poe wrote in the Romanticism period.

Poe gave short shrift to the upcoming Transcendentalists(a Northern circle of thought and style). Thye returned the favor with disdain and emnity, mainly for his attacks on Longfellow and his popular sensationalism. A regional rift too though Poe visited and lived in Northern cities like Boston and New York. Perhaps his savaging of their prominent literary lions and lionesses in his scathing magazine criticism("tomahawk Poe") was not the best way to gain their respect. Poe in his poems and Gothic tales and wide field of interests and creativity mirrors the European Romantics such as Coleridge, Byron, Thomas Moore, etc. in that his life and soul matches theirs more than any other American poet.
