The Kenyan police's naive investigation has caused anger among the Israeli security agents sent to Mombasa.

First, the Kenyan forensic expert searching for clues among the bombed ruins of the Paradise Mombasa Hotel managed to drop an important fragment of what was believed to be a gas canister used in the attack.

He then really angered the watching Israelis - many of them Mossad agents - by handing the piece to journalists to examine. "No," shouted the Israelis, who had hitherto maintained a diplomatic distance.

The damage began when Kenyan police failed to secure the bomb blast site last Thursday. Outsiders were allowed to sift through the area for hours, potentially contaminating important evidence.
