HYDERABAD: It's pink. It can spread the message at speeds in excess of 45 km per hour. One of its kind, it's the world's first condom-shaped motorbike.

Equipped with a tape recorder, that plays messages on the virtues of condom use and the ways in which human beings contact AIDS, it carries a made-in-Hyderabad tag.

This unique condom mobike was launched at a club in the city on Thursday. Mounted on a 60-cc engine, the bike is a single-seater and made of light steel. The owner of the bike, K Sudhakar, professes his mission is to send the two-wheeler through the country to spread the message of safe sex.

A car designer by profession, Sudhakar says he has custom- made cars shaped like brinjals and onions. "I wanted to do something relevant this time. And what better cause to champion than AIDS. Andhra Pradesh ranks second highest in the country's AIDS map and I reside in Hyderabad. This is my contribution to the cause." The bike — equipped with a headlight, tail lamps and indicators — has a flap that slides over the handle when it's not in use. To push back the flap, the driver has to press a remote control button. The taped message starts playing as soon as the flap covers the handle bar.

Other than lecturing its audience on the spread of AIDS, the tapes enlighten people on things such as who discovered condoms. Just in case you are wondering who it was, here are the sound bites for you: "In 3,000 BC, King Minos of Crete used a fish bladder to protect himself from the risks of unprotected sex."

More pearls of wisdom for you. Condoms were first mass-produced by Goodyear and Hancock in 1844. The first condom advertisement appeared in The New York Times. Dr Power's French Preventives was the pioneering advertiser. The pre-recorded message states that the advent of the pill and the sexual revolution of the 1960s almost put an end to condom use.
