Zsa Zsa Gabor in coma after accident By ANDREW BRIDGES Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was hospitalized and in a coma Thursday after a car she was riding in struck a light pole on Sunset Boulevard, a family spokesman said.

Gabor suffered multiple broken bones, cuts and bruises in Wednesday's accident and was being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said Gerd Birkmann, a spokesman for her husband, Frederic von Anhalt.

"The worst injuries are to her head," Birkmann said from Germany.

Gabor, 85, was a passenger in the front seat of a car driven by her hairdresser when the accident occurred Wednesday evening, said von Anhalt, who was reached at Cedars-Sinai early Thursday. He would not comment on the extent of her injuries, but said she remained unconscious.

"The motor went into the front seat," he said.

Her hairdresser also was hospitalized, von Anhalt said. The accident happened around 8 p.m. in West Hollywood as the two planned to go shopping, Birkmann said.

The cause of the accident was unknown, said Sgt. Bruce Thomas of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.

For decades, the glamorous, Hungarian-born Gabor has epitomized the celebrity who is famous for being famous. Her furs, jewels, looks -- and humor -- kept her in the news long after her film career faded.

She was married eight times; among her husbands were hotel millionaire Conrad Hilton and Oscar-winning actor George Sanders. She married von Anhalt in 1986.

"Personally, I know nothing about sex because I have always been married," she joked in a 1987 speech to the American Bar Association.

Among her more prominent films: John Huston's Toulouse-Lautrec biopic, "Moulin Rouge," 1952; "The Story of Three Loves," 1953; "The Girl in the Kremlin," 1957; and Orson Welles' classic "Touch of Evil," 1958. She was also in B movies such as "Queen of Outer Space," 1958, and "Picture Mommy Dead," 1966, and more recently kidded around with David Letterman in videotaped segment on his show.

Gabor, sisters Eva and Magda, and their mother, Jolie, all emigrated to America around the time of World War II.

Eva, who had starred in the television show "Green Acres," died in 1995 at age 74. Mother Jolie died in April 1997 at age 97 and Magda, who lived largely out of the spotlight, died in June 1997 at age 78.

In 1989, Gabor was sentenced to 72 hours in jail for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer. She also was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service at a women's shelter.

Zsa Zsa Gabor's Daughter: My Mother Is Not In A Coma

Car's Driver Reportedly Wore Seatbelt

UPDATED: 5:57 p.m. PST November 28, 2002 LOS ANGELES -- The daughter of socialite and actress Zsa Zsa Gabor denied her mother was in a coma Thursday, telling reporters that her mother suffered a broken arm in a car crash and should be out of the hospital within a few days.

Constance Francesca Hilton also said the 84-year-old former Miss Hungary was wearing her seat belt when the red Corvette she was in crashed into a street pole at Sweetzer Avenue and Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood Wednesday.

According to earlier reports, Gabor's hairstylist was driving when the car jumped the curb about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and slammed into the pole, which was damaged but did not fall.

Hilton, daughter of the hotel magnate who was one of Gabor's eight husbands, said her mother did not suffer a serious head injury. She said the doctors at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have to assume the worst-case scenario when treating someone.

She acknowledged that her mother was on a respirator for a time, and said that she did suffer some "trauma," as is typical for any serious accident victim.

She said the male hairstylist, who she did not identify, suffered air bag deployment injuries and is "riddled with guilt," but also was wearing his seat belt and should be OK as well. She thanked her mother's fans for their many calls of concern.

"She never was in a coma. She was wearing her seat belt. She's going to be just fine," Hilton said.

"She has a broken arm and she was in trauma. She was shocked. Every accident's a shock. She's going to be fine. I want to thank all the fans for their concern. She's going to be fine. I can't call everybody back. No, she's going to be fine!" Gabor's daughter said.

Asked about reports that her mother had serious head injuries, she answered quickly.

"No, no, no, no. Nothing, nothing. She has a broken arm. That's it. They just did precautionary things. They weren't sure. She may have hit her head a little bit."

"Any hit to the head is considered a concussion, you must realize that. I could touch my head now and that would be a `concussion.' That doesn't mean anything. The hospital always tells you the most horrible scenario. Everything's going to be fine. She'll probably be out (of the hospital) in a day or two. And, again, we want to thank everybody for their concern," she said.

What about the hairstylist?

"He's doing much better. His air bag deployed. He's in a lot of pain from the air bag. But he's doing much better and he's going to be very fine. Don't worry about him. He's just riddled with guilt. But it was an accident," Hilton said.
