Nikon LS30 using Adaptec USB2Xchange

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have used my Nikon scanner LS30 on my old PC for several years without any problem. I recently bought a new PC running WinXP. My old SCSI card is not a PCI card, so I decided to attach my scanner to an USB2 port using Adaptec USB2Xchange. Both USB2Xchange and scanner are detected by WinXP and the drivers are installed ok. The device manager reports that both devices are working properly. I also installed the latest ASPI driver for WinXP. But when using the Nikon scan software 3.1.2, it reports that it does not find any active devices. Idem for photoshop.

Has anybody any idea what is wrong, suggestions?

Thanks, Eric

Hi, Eric,

i understand that LS30 comes with the Nikon software 2.5. maybe the new version 3.1.2 is not suitable for LS30. have you ever tried the new version on your old PC ?

Eric,

I have exactly the same problem with USB2Xchange and my Canoscan FS4000 film scanner. Error message shows that transmission can not be established....

There is a Japanese Adaptec site that lists SCSI devices that have been confirmed to work with USB2Xchange.

http://www.adaptec.co.jp/compati/usb2/usb2xchange.html

Unfortunately, you can see there are very few scanners which have been confirmed so far. I am also waiting for suggestions from the people on the net.

Thanks.

Having the same problem with a Minolta MS 6000 Microfilm scanner. According to Adaptec, one of the devices on the scsi bus must be supplying termination power. This is different aparently from the operating power which the USB2Xchange gets from either the SCSI device or the USB port. In our case, the Minolta Scanner and the USB2Xchange both are found by windows and there seems to be some scsi communication, but when we go into the scanning application, it does not find a scanner.

The problem is that Nikon Scan is looking in the SCSI bus for a device, but it's actually in the USB bus (when attached via the Adaptec USB2Xchange cable). A program called Vue Scan will work (downloadable for free on the 'net). Does anyone know how to point Nikon Scan into the USB bus?

Hi, I tried Vue Scan with Windows XP and usb2xchange and it worked fine. I also tried the Nikon Software with usb2xchange on windows 98 and it worked also. The adapted driver on win 98 shows the scanner as an scsi device. But there seems no chance to get win xp, usb2xchange and the actual release of nikon software to get to work.

Has anyone asked nikon to support the usb bus with their drivers?

Update: I've contacted Nikon and Adaptec. Nikon replyed: USB-Exchange Adapter won't be supported. Newer versions of software or drivers are not planned at the moment.

And this is what adaptec says: Hello from Adaptec. This is in response to the issues you are having with your USB2XChange. At this time we have no workaround for this issue. We don't have any drivers for this product that list it as a SCSI device and I'm not aware of any reference drivers that do have this capability and might be used with the USB2XChange. At the moment there is also no development in this direction as far as I'm aware of. As most of the integrated Twaindrivers in the software packages are based on a Windows-ASPI layer that communicates with SCSI hardware only, this will be a problem. Therefore I can't see a solution to have this combination working together in any newer OS (Win2k, XP,...).

--- Now i try to get the silverfast Product to getto work, which is my last hope...

Another update: I've got it work. It seems to be a bit stupid, but it works fine. I've installed VMWare (www.vmware.com) a virtual machine. and into vmware i installed win 98, in which i can use the adpatec usb2xchange with the nikon coolscane III.

Hi.

Couldn't get it to work with FS4000US either, on XP that is. The final answer from Adaptec was "we have issues with some of the scanners".

I gave up on getting XP, LS-30 and 3.1.2 to work together (using the scsi card), but read somewhere that the reason is XP needs a LS-30 FIRMWARE upgrade to work with Nikonscan software. Trouble is you can't apply that except through Nikonscan software... So what I'd have to do is re-install the whole lot on my W98 box, upgrade firmware, uninstall, reinstall in XP and then run it. Damned if I was going to do that, so bought VueScan. That works fine on XP without any firmware changes. Since then I got an LS-50, which is fine in XP but has USB 2 problems I haven't yet fixed...

Good luck!
