Try www.eapoe.org. Elements of personal tragedy, poverty, literary successes and job losses, may be what everyone is looking for. He was a natural poet and there are other influences and milestones in his career. Sometime the reader might confuse the two since often Poe chose to write about melancholy tragedies that seem to but don't necessarily relate to a particular incident. For example his wife was still alive when he wrote "The Raven" and "Annanbel Lee" is more a literary product than a tribute to Virginia. Some details hint strongly at Virginia, but people still argue about it since Poe used the work in several ways and with other females he was courting as a new widower.

I suppose the initial inspiration and course of his vocation is the clearest place to look, implying hardships and loneliness to come. The poem "Alone" and "Dreams" displays that vision, the despair, the horror and the exultant obsession with his calling that Baudelaire expresses with more spleen as a curse.
