Fancy Fingernails Can Catch Fire

Acrylic Nails Burn Fastest

They are one of the fastest growing fashion accessories -- fingernails.

Women either enhance their own nails or have a set of artificial nails applied.

But there is a new concern for women who want beautiful nails. The powder and liquid that form a bond on the nail are flammable.

Jane Gober learned how easily it can happen when she was lighting candles at church.

"I had a Bic lighter and to get to the angle it is, I tipped my hand too far up and the flame was directly on the nail. When I pulled my hand away, it was like a little candle, I just blew it out."

Your natural nails can catch fire also, but not nearly as fast as artificial nails.

When lighting a cigarette or candles, nail technicians suggest keeping nails shorter and using a lighter with a long tip.

Ruth to the Rescue tested a professional acrylic nail, a painted press-on nail, and a plain press-on nail.

The store-bought press-on nail was consumed the fastest, in just six seconds. Most of the fingernails took 10 to 15 seconds to completely ignite.

Chemists say the plastic tip and the acrylic coating are made of polymers thar are extremely flammable.

The women at work who are of African decent use those nails. The lengths they go to are unreal. I dunno how they manage to handle anything.

I always fear they might put their eye out, or hurt some other part of their body. Good taste [never been accused of it but what the hell] prevents me from describing that in more detail. LOL
