Britons have sex more often than Americans and Spaniards, but are outdone by the French, Dutch, Danes and Canadians, a survey today has found. People in the UK make love an average of 149 times a year, narrowly pipped by couples in France (167), the Netherlands (158), Denmark (152) and Canada (150).

Those taking their love-making at a more relaxed pace included Americans (138), New Zealanders (135) and the Spaniards, who limped in at an annual love rate of just 121.

Some 3,500 British people took part in an online survey organised by Durex which, polled 50,000 people worldwide.

Almost four out of 10 British respondents admitted that they had had unprotected sex with a new partner in the past 12 months, despite more than two thirds believing Aids is a serious problem in Britain.

The young are putting themselves most at risk of sexual infection, with 46 per cent aged 18 to 20 saying they had had sex without a condom with a new partner in the past year.

While Americans, Latin Americans, and Antipodeans fared badly in the "league of love", they produced many of the individuals to whom most people would like to make love.

Brad Pitt is deemed to be the sexiest male (33 per cent), followed by David Beckham and Enrique Iglesias, both at 16 per cent. For men, Kylie Minogue is the female celebrity most dream of sleeping with, with 18 per cent of the vote, followed closely by Jennifer Lopez at 17 per cent.

The leading lovers were: 1 France (167); 2 Netherlands (158); 3 Denmark (152); 4 Canada (150); 5 Britain (149 or just under 2.9 times weekly); 6 Germany (147), Yugoslavia (147); 8 South Africa (146); 9= Austria (144), Norway (144); 11 Poland (141).
