One glass of wine was enough to cause mental upheavals. Alcoholic but did not evidence it much externally. Took no drugs except maybe laudanum once in a weak suicide attempt over a courtship disappointment in his harrowing later years. Neither imagination nor production derived from drink. If you want a lesson on writing and stimulants read Stephen King's "On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft." They did nothing but harm and had nothing to do with the imaginary aspects of his works.

Charles Baudelaire, the French disciple of Poe took a lot of things with basically the same negative results "Les Paradis Artificiels."

In France drug companies GAVE stimulants to the most creative minds as an experiment. Even Baudelaire diapproved of the more staid members of his circle ehtusiatically participating. Dickens and others got hooked on "painkillers" such as laudanum. Shortened a lot of careers and there were no Betty Ford Clinics back then.

Well I agree he is not crap he is one of my favorite poets and had a very sad life, considering that all of the women that he loved died of tiberculosis ( I think thats how you spell it) well anyways he was a great writer in his time but never got the credit for it since most of his poems were never published untill after he died.
