11/21/02 Search for Kidnapped Woman Resumes

Shortly after getting a briefing from Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett, search crews went back to work early Thursday morning in the search for Alice Donovan. Law enforecement agencies think Donovan was kidnapped by two escapees who broke out of a Kentucky jail.

Police are searching a 30 mile stretch of U.S. 17 for a missing South Carolina woman. They believe Donovan, Chadrick Fulks and Branden Basham stopped for gas at an Amoco station in Shallotte the day she disappeared. It's the last place police believe anyone, other than her kidnappers, saw Alice alive.

Police say the men abducted Alice Thursday, November 14, from a Wal-Mart in Conway, SC. That happened around 2:30. At 4:04, police say she and the two men stopped at the Amoco in Shallotte. They then got back on U.S. 17 and drove north towards Bolivia. Around 4:28, Alice made a cell phone call to her daughter. Two hours later, Fulks and Basham were back in South Carolina without Donovan.

Now police are combing the area, on the ground and in the air. Five law enforcement agencies, hundreds of officers and more support when they want it. Monica Caison, Director of the CUE Center for Missing Persons, "We have called and offered our search assistance and when that becomes available for us, we'll be there as well." Monica spoke with Alice's family Wednesday. She says they were excited to hear about Fulks' arrest, but disappointed at the same time. "When they heard today that they were arrested and there was other people in the car, they just [thought] it's her, you know, and it wasn't."

Chadrick Fulks was caught Wednesday in northern Indiana. . The other escapee -- Branden Basham -- was arrested Sunday in Kentucky after police say he tried to steal a woman's car. The two have also been linked to the abduction of a Kentucky man, who escaped after being tied to a tree and abandoned. Fulks was awaiting trial on robbery charges, while Basham was serving a five-year sentence for writing a bad check.
