Go to www.eapoe.org Poe's works his essay "The Philosophy of Composition" for an explanation of the choice of a dying young woman as an ideal theme. Also Poe's biography of loss(mother, foster mother, menor Mrs. Stanard, Royster(lost to another man). it goes from real life experience to idealization of his need to more losses that are too painfully real for simple poetic sentiment(his wife Virginia). poedecoder.com has something on this too perhaps.
