When summarizing Poe or other writers of his time try to separate at first the incidents from the sometimes wearing dialogues and philosophies that play around the mood and analasis. The simple events can be stated quite briefly. The purpose of the surrounding thought is to play the mind into the mood, drawing it in like a slow building dramatic trap, which is the tale in this case anyway.

Sometimes we get so bogged down or, hopefully, so wrapped up in the intended mood of the tale, that we have no interest in stepping back and seeing what is happening. The second reading should be for that. Usually for Poe it is never quite as simple as the simple events would have you think at first. The complexitiy and contradiction, the deeper revelations are there and a part of your response to the story even if you don't at first see all the elements, such as the half-denials of the narrator that his murderous actions had horrified himself.
