Why would the neighborhood endanger The Church

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

I just read a new story that places a Church buiding that is still being used on a list or historic places that are endag ngered. Some sites were enndanger of demolition but the church is threatened by neighborhood endagerment.

Should this congregation relocate from a negihborhood that it shoud serve? Should religous facilites be built in the black neighborhood?

Congregation "A" moved from the east side of townm the black neighorhood to a larger facility some 5 blocks away in a neighborhhod that used to be the poor white section that is now higly black populated. Congregation "B" is less than three years old, moved from a rented facility in a commercial area, to the former location of congregation "A". Congregation "B" has a plan in place to pay for their facility in two years.

Congregation A is presently the only Afro-Americna congregaiton that occupies a building that was built with teaching facilities in mind.

In both situations the neighborhoods will be changed instead of the Church being endangered by the neighborhood.

What are your thoughts on this?

I am not sure I understand what you mean by "endangered" could you please explain a little more about what you mean. I know there have been churches that have been threated by "getrification" that is a section of the city is bought up by rich developers and poor people of working class people are forced to move because they cannot afford the rent or high property taxes. I am looking forward to hearing a little bit more about what you mean.

Rev.. Rogers,

I'm mererly reflrecting what appeared in the B Secion of THe NASHVILLE TENNESSEAN today.

This church is at least 150 years of age int eh black sectioon of town. I assume that becasue of its location and the less than desirable human beings that reside or hang around this building of worship pose a safety threat to the worshipers and to the historical value of the structure.

There are at least four other ocngregations that may not be as old as this piece of history but they have not expressed thier feelings of being endangered.

Be Blessed! WHS -----------------
