IDF forces began a wide-scale operation in Nablus and other parts of Samaria overnight.

According to Israel Radio, armored vehicles and infantry entered Nablus early this morning, taking complete control of the city and the adjoining refugee camp by about 5 a.m. They took over key positions and began searches for terrorists.

The operation is focusing on the Nablus kasbah area, the radio said.

News agencies report that dozens of tanks and armored personnel carriers entered Nablus from several directions, backed by helicopter gunships.

Israeli security noted that Nablus is a hotbed of terrorism, serving as a launching pad for terrorist groups.

Israel forces also entered Beit Zeit, north of Ramallah overnight, the radio reported, arresting some 25 terrorist suspects before withdrawing.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz approved a large-scale operation against terrorist targets, following consultations with security officials. Israel Radio said security sources say operations will not be limited time wise, and the targets will all be terrorist infrastructure in Samaria; the operation is expected to last several days at least.

The operation comes in the wake of last Sunday's terrorist attack on Kibbutz Metzer, in which five people were murdered.
