OTTAWA (CP) - Some lollipops imported from Argentina may contain blood and should not be eaten, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned Friday after receiving a complaint from someone who discovered reddish-brown spots in their candy.

The inspection agency was notified and found that two of the partially-eaten lollipops contained blood, the agency said in a release. The source of the blood found on the Lipo Brand lollipops, imported from Argentina, was unknown. Officials were trying to determine where the blood might have come from and Health Canada was still assessing the potential health risk Friday.

"Based on available information, consuming the candy is unlikely to pose a health risk," the food agency said in a release.

"However, consumers may wish to exercise caution by not consuming this product."

The lollipops, sold across Canada, may contain one or more reddish-brown spots visible inside the candy portion itself.

The ball-shaped Lipo Brand lollipops are sold in various flavours and colours, with either the name Wamis or Lipo on the label.

Flavours may include Magico, Super Acidos (Sour), Fruit, and Dulce De Leche (Caramel). The lollipops are sold in bags of 50 or 140 pieces.
