A rumor.....Or not? .....A sequel to FF7?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : All Things Final Fantasy II : One Thread

I was browsing my various gaming sites today, and stumbled on this interesting Tidbit at Squareamp....

"Hot on the heels of the formal announcement of Final Fantasy X-2, Japanese site Quiter is reporting that series' producer Yoshinori Kitase mentioned a possible sequel to the series' most popular installment, Final Fantasy VII, in the upcoming issue of Japan's number one game magazine, Famitsu. According to Quiter, in an interview in the mag, Kitase says that he would like to make a continuation to FFVII -- and lots of other people do, too, including character designer Tetsuya Nomura (who recently debuted as a director in his own right with Square's immensely popular Kingdom Hearts.) Kitase goes on to say that since there are so many ardent fans of the game, they don't want to make a bad game. Consequently, concrete plans and a schedule for the game have not been decided upon. It sounds a bit far-fetched, but so did FFX-2 until it happened. We'll see what develops in the future."

So, what's your take on this? Even if it IS a rumor....

Do you really need to ask?

What a stupid shit for brains cockroach fucking son of a whore penis askew disgusting mantitties on the fat kid from the Goonies dripping diarrheal misguided idea.

Here we go again, catering to these people who know NOTHING about the rest of the series. Lowest god damn common denominator. I use to get picked on prior to 1997 for being a Final Fantasy player. Final Fantasy 7 comes out, and all of a sudden, all these fat yuppies with their new Play Stations they bought with one week's allowance are ALL Final Fantasy buffs. I beat Sephiroth, I beat Sephiroth, nyah nyah *phpbpbpbpp* Who is Kefka? What is a Doom Gaze? Zeromus? Chaos? What's worse is that 80% of those little fart factories IGNORE the rest of the series! I don't like 8 or 9. I've never PLAYED them, but I beat Ruby Weapon yesterday!

So now, fresh off the commercial success of FFX, we decide to once again dole out what the masses want, leaving us old heads out to dry. Just like a catering parent. This makes me sick. FF7b, FFXb. Why not FF6b? FF9b? FF4b? You all already have my reasons why 7 and 10 suck, do NOT get me started. I can give out just as many reasons why these games BLOW SEVEN AND TEN OUT OF THE GOD DAMN WATER, BUT NOBODY GIVES A FUCK BECAUSE I'M NOT A YUPPIE KID! ISN'T MY MONEY AS GOOD AS THEIRS? NO, IT ISN'T, BECAUSE THERE IS JUST ONE OF ME WHERE THEY TAKE UP THE ENTIRE RURAL AND SUBURBAN POPULATION OF THE FREE WORLD! THIS IS A SHINING EXAMPLE OF WHY CAPITALIST NATIONS AND AN ENTIRE POPULATION OF AMERICAN CHILDREN ARE DOOMED! DOOMED, I TELL YOU! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED! That's the gist!

Oh yeah, and a stellar point brought up by Mr. Rootbeer would be that Final Fantasy games do NOT have sequels. 11 games, nary a sequel. Crossovers out the ass (Gogo and Matoya in 9, LionHeart in 10), but that's it.

OH! AND ONE OTHER THING! ALL YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT THINK 7 IS SO GOD DAMNED HOLY! REMEMBER WHEN AERIS DIED? MADE FOR A KILLER PLOT TWIST, RIGHT? WELL WHAT IF THEY BRING HER ASS BACK? EVER STOP TO CONSIDER THAT? YOU'VE JUST RUINED HALF OF THE ALREADY SHITJOB STORYLINE FROM THE ORIGINAL TITLE!

EVEN BETTER, WHAT IF THEY INTRODUCE CHARACTERS YOU DON'T LIKE? ANNOYING LITTLE COCONUT SHITMARBLES LIKE RINOA FROM 8 OR KIMAHRI FROM 10! A WHOLE CAST OF CAIT SITHS! HAHAHA BRING ON THE SEQUEL! I SWEAR I HOPE IT MAKES ALL OF YOU DEVELOP A DISTASTE FOR 7 THAT MATCHES MY OWN! YOU'VE BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELVES! THAT'S THE GIST!

I also agree with AO 7 was my favorite untill i went old school and played FFVI (what i thought was 3 at the time) now 7 is not exactly my favorite anymore makeing a sequell to a FF game kinda defeats the purpose of the hole different worlds in no way related to each other and when the game ends it makes you think a little like at the end of 9 i was racking my mind for days about what would go in in the forrest when zadiane whent in to help Kuja.makeing a sequel just takes that away

-- Anonymous, November 08, 2002

I have to agree also, i played ff7 and loved it, before then i hadn't even heard of the final fantasy series. then i bought ff8 and was grossly dissapointed then followed ff9 and which was better than 8 but worse than 7. Then i downloaded ff6 after hearing it was the best and i have to agree. ffx is the second best by far, you can argue all you like but you won't change my mind...BUT 6 IS THE BEST...though i haven't completed it yet...

-- Anonymous, November 08, 2002

ff6 is better, but ff7 was more fun the first time i played it, AND I LIKED THE STORY SO SHUT YOUR POOPHOLE AO ;),

y'kno' I b' clownin' righ' dawg?

Well, to answer the original post, I heard FFX-2 is supposedly a sequel to FFX where Yuna and Rikku are on a quest to save Tidus from some sort of eternal prison he's been trapped in. I think it was in the latest EGM magazine I saw a picture of how Yuna looks in FFX. They called it a "Lara Croft makeover". I mean, Yuna uses a gun! This game sounds pretty damn cool. It's supposed to be out around November- December 2003. So far, I haven't heard of a Final Fantasy VII sequel, but I think Squaresoft is running out of ideas so they might actually make it. BTW, anyone who hasn't played Kingdom Hearts yet really should. I did underestimate how cool that game would be. SJ and I beat it last Friday so..woo! ^^

ok i just went to EB today the guy there told me that FFX-@ is gonna be a PREquil to 10 not a sequil

-- Anonymous, November 09, 2002

Well now...a sequel to FF7...wonderful. A piss poor copy of the magicite system, over emphasis on poorly developed characters, and an all too preppy "You can be popular if you have spiky blonde hair" attitude. And they are making a sequel. And to think, there are days when I don't wonder why I wake up.

-- Anonymous, November 09, 2002

There are so many things wrong with that, 1 magicite is in ff6 it is materia in ff7...(if my memory serves me correctly and that brick didn't damage me)...2, i have no 2...also how the fuck are they supposed to ressurect a dream..? Even by the realms of a fantasy game thats impossible...

this is in response to people like AO I Guess i am that stereotypical new final fantasy buff. I didn't hear about final fantasy until about like 96, i think, anyway i know now that there were final fantasies first. but for poor people like myself, low income prevented me from buying the earlier installments. so in other words its not people like me, fault that we arent "original players of the series". why get bothered that new people are introduced to a series you liked or still might like.all that is happening is its being kept around and helping people like you out by keeping the series alive and around. if it wasnt for ff7 you might not have ff8 ff9 ff10 ff10-2 anyway i think the sequel to ff7 is a great idea and should be pushed to its full extent

I've read all the posts here and so far all I see is a whole lot of people opposed to an FF7 sequel. I have been a die hard Final Fantasy fan ever since the original NES game. There is nothing wrong with making a sequel to any FF game. There are people complaining that the series is getting repetitive and that production should be stopped all together. So what, they are getting a few departments to work on FFX-2. Squaresoft has said themselves that there are not going to be any new ingenuities in the game. The department that is working on it is not full of the best people, and that it is not going to be the game of the century. There is a limit to the amount of original ideas that can be put into any new FF game. Final Fantasy 7 was the first full 3D, computer animated game. That drew in a big crowd. Everyone has to start somewhere, and for many people it was that game. I can honestly say that I have never hated an FF game. They all have their moments, the things that get to you in just the right way. Big deal, they are making a game that is going to satisfy the minority or majority of us who want to see a game continue. I have always been satisfied with FF endings and have learned that they will always be unsatisfying in some way. Now that they are going to address that on a few of their biggest games, all I can say is, good job, keep surprising us, keep the controversy and continue to make the best damn games I have ever played. Who's to say they are not going to revamp FF6 (my second favorite) into a fully computer animated game, or make a sequel to it.... whatever they do, Squaresoft has never disapointed me even at the worst of times.

Look at me I'm an elite punk that doesn't like anything once it goes mainstream.

Oops, I was confusing myself with the rest of you guys. Materia was the best magic system there is. That alone is enough to make a sequel/spinoff/whatever.

-- Anonymous, November 13, 2002

Yeah, I agree! Materia is the best magic system ever! A little magic ball that you plug into your weapon or armor that helps you use a spell or ability! Ingenious, I say! I especially love how you FORGET how to cast the spell as soon as you take the little glowing magic ball OUT of your equipment! A magic ball mind-meld between an inanimate object and your gray matter! IT'S AMAZING! AMAZING!

In case you haven't figured out, I think that Materia rivals the worst ideas I've ever heard. It wouldn't work. It would turn out like that "internet" thing I've heard so much about. Why would you forget how to "Counterattack" if you equipped a different weapon? Do you forget how to shit when you take your shoes off?

I like FF6's magic system best. You learn a spell that an Esper knew at a set rate, and once you LEARN THE SPELL, you KNOW the spell. Abilities are a different story, but at least the characters have UNIQUE abilties. Cyan is a Knight. He uses Sword Techniques. Locke is a Thief. He steals. Cloud is an Ex-Soldier. He...well, he...uses swords? Come on, man! You don't see anyone's unique skills until they use a Limit Break! You need materia to teach you how to shoot a gun? Jump? THROW FUCKING DICE ???

-- Anonymous, November 14, 2002

Actually the best system was in ff9 where you wore a piece of equipment or armour and you could use the ability, however when you take it off you forgot it, yet if you wore it for long enough you learned it for good, ff6 would be better if the espers taught you magic in this way, it is a little annoying that you suddenly learnt it...but thats a mere technicality...

I hope a sequel to any of the final fantasies will be a good idea, and look forward to one in a way, but i don't see how any accept for 3 (6 jap) can have one. The character development in three, and the way it left you, was really quite amazing, and by far the best ending that a final fantasy ever had. I would love to continue with the characters of 3. Why can't the others have a sequel? They all contain what I like to call 'japped' endings. In anything japanese, especially anime, there is a mega-screwed up ending that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, and is complete change from the rest of the storyline. In seven, why did they go to the earth's core, fight some huge floating ball, then a really messed up sephoroth, followed by an angelic sephoroth that was somehow able to destroy multiple planets by use of the sun to harm the characters, and yet, the earth still survies, and then finally fight him in a dream. WTF? In 8, it somehow becomes aparent that a soceress from a no-zone in time is doing all this stuff, and they have to go to this no-zone and kill her in outer space, then wander around in the depths of time for a long time before somehow getting back. The game was well grounded before this point, and I loved the politics going on between the gardens. Why did it have to end with this whole epic screwed up legend crap? In nine, garland MADE zidane? and Kuja? in some type of 'other world'? and then this 'creator' thing comes and destroys some type of crystal, but they kill it, and everything is ok again? WTF? That was messed up! How do you make a sequel to that???? And 10, well, he was a friggin dream, whatever the hell that means, and he went away. plot flawed so bad....again, the begining was ok, till you learn more and it becomes 'japped'. Therefore, 3 could really be the only decent sequel, or else the other ones would be quite bad in story. gameplay is great, but the japanese just can't write worth a damn. Oh, and if you really want to see a japped ending, play metal gear solid 2. the first one was awsome, with a great plot and story, then this one....dear lord, what the hell happened?

a secquell to any game in the FF series is a poor idea the magic of the ff series is that once you beat the game that "world" is safe and you move on to the next one and on`t dwell on it you get new charcters, wepon etc. makeing a sequell pigon holes it

-- Anonymous, November 20, 2002

First of all, AO, first of all I think you need to calm down a bit a realise that other people have opinions. I don't think an FF7 sequel would be too bad to be honest. I mean, the idea may be a little flawed, but all in all, FF7 was a good game with a good storyline, and if Square want to take it forward, I'm going to trust them. The one thing I'm wondering is whether they're going to use the fabulous new hardware they've got in the PS2 to revamp FF7 and make the graphics as good quality as FFX, or even add voices?? Another possibility is that they're not going to use the original characters, just keep the world and its history, and put it from another perspective. And yes, FF6 was a good game, but personally, not my favourite. I thought FF8 had better junctioning and FFX better music and graphics. I have, however, enjoyed all of the storylines (excepting 9), which is the most important part. I thought FF9's storyline was a little too trite.

I got a headache reading the heaps of sewage you people are spilling out of your mouths. It's ridiculous and naive to single out people because they haven't played your precious "oldskool" FF1-6. I've played and beaten every one, and frankly, I prefer 7 over any of them. I prefer 7's plot, characters, magic system, *music* by far, and graphics. And no, I'm not a 3D junkie, I like Chrono Trigger moreso than FF7. In my oh-so humble opinion, FF7 is simply a better game than it's predecessors. So, my purist friends, fuck off. Someone earlier in the thread nailed it with the "Elite punk who hates anything mainstream" crack.

Okay, and now a point. Yes, I do have one. I'm not sure a FF7 sequel would work, due to the way they ended the first game. How much sense would it make, and how obvious would their attempts to remedy it be? And, the fact that FF7 (once again, in my opinion), was such a flawless gem, it's a big task to live up to the fans to create something similarly grand. A *big* task. Even a decision on graphics would be brutal. Do we go about it with a realistic approach as in XIII or X, do we use the same basic models, or do we go for a more refined and fantasial look as in IX? Toughies. And the musical score, just try to muster up something to compare with the first game's. Just *try* and replace Sephiroth's music, or the Turks even, with a new tune. The developers would be torn limb from limb.

Big decisions, big risk.
