Why was Poe's death such a mystrey??

What was the offical cause of his death??

The romantic version of Poe's death was that he died from a bout of drinking. It has turned up, however, that Poe died from a form of rabies that has a long gestation period before any symptoms occur.

Rabies is not only imaginative and unfounded but unlikely in that the symtoms do NOT match. See www.eapoe.org for a more balanced view of the unknown circumstances leading up to him being found sick and dying in a tavern instead of on a boat home.

Probable cause: Snared by vote fraud press gangs, plied with drink and dragged with new clothes from polling place to polling place. According to the means of the day you can only really see some the symptoms he exhibited- unfortunately embellished and dramatized by the good doctor on his lucrative lecture circuit thereafter.
