making wicking at home

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

ok, as promised,, here's the recipe for making homemade wicks. I havnt tried it yet,, I may during the cold/boring winter months. If anybody getts adventurous, let us know how it works.

soak heavy cotton yarn for 12 hours in a solution of:

1 TB salt

2 TB boric acid

in one cup of water. After yarn is dry , braid to form wick.

A cheap source for boric acid I found, at the dollar store was "roach powder",,I checked the ingredients,, only one listed is, Boric Acid

Thanks, Stan! I've always wanted to do this - I'll try it soon. My daughter has a gift store, burns a lot of candles of all sizes and scents, and gives the burned-out candles to me - I melt the wax down and put them in containers, and have good-as-new candles to burn. This will help with wicks - I always have problems finding good wicks for large containers.

for wicks, check with bee keeping supply companies, and see what they go for there. Most will sell by the foot. Or another place, is ebay, I check there, to see if anyone is selling wicking for a cheap price.
