oil lamps

greenspun.com : LUSENET : CountrySide Family : One Thread

a friens, who doesnt have electric light,, uses lamps,, K1 lamps,, but,, most palces now, sells heating oil as K1. K1 isnt supposed to be dyed or ahve sulfer in it. The stuff we get around here, etched the glass,, glogs the wicks,, smokes the glass ,,ect.

With the price of "K1" and such,, white gas, ,,ie,, coleman fuel is actually cheaper,, so,, IM wondering if you can use white gas in lamp oil lamps? Not Alladin lamps, but cheapo oil lamps? If mixes , half/half.. think it would work?

I would NOT use coleman fuel (white gas) in oil lamps, even half and half. I think that would explode. NO,NO.Get the lamp oil. Better safe than sorry.

well,, I went and did the test anyways,,, outdoor though. Didnt explode , but it did flash pretty well, adn a flame wouuld shoot up thru the chimney pretty far,, I was surprised by that sight. So,, back to square one,,loking for REAL K1, undyed,, not the stuf they try to sell as K1 at the gas stations

We bought K1 at the home improvement store- Lowes. Most larger places that sell kerosene heaters has it in 5 gal cans near the heaters. Do you have a Farm & Fleet, Fleet Farm, Menards,Home Depot or Lowes in your area? I know Fleet Farm sold it in WI and so did Menards. I'm glad you didn't have a worse explosion, white gas can be deadly.
