John! Good for you! I love trees and have set out an estimated 1500 to 2000 in the last 20 some years. I've moved severl ash trees along with maples.

First thing I do is dig a hole with a post hole digger where I want to set the tree out at. About 18 to 24 inches deep-depending on how big the tree is-and drop a piece of old rusty scrap iron in the bottom. Cut a piece of plastic hose and lay alongside the hole-dump some gravel or sand in the hose and some in the bottom of the hole.

Take a spade or shovel and cut a circle around the tree--about a foot from the tree. You will have to cut some roots on the outter edge of the circle but that's ok. The tap root will also have to be cut-- make that as deep as you can.

Set the tree in the hole and measure how high up on the tree the ground level is. If the hole is too deep fill it up some with potting soil or loose top soil. Make sure the waterin pipe is reaching the bottom of the hole. Fill the pipe with gravel.

The tree may need to be supported until it takes root. On all trees that I've set out or transplanted I have found that it takes 3 years for that dude to grow any. Those first 3 years are spent developing a root system.

We all need more trees! One of Almighty God's best blessings!!! old hoot. Matt.24:44

"....drop a piece of old rusty scrap iron in the bottom"

Hey Hoot, how come you do this? For the iron? I feel so uninformed.

Hey Patty! Yeppie--for the iron. Old rusty nails work fine too-- espcecially if the tree is already grow'n. Just stick'm into the ground around the tree. old hoot. Matt.24:44
