Most of the civillian .338 chambered rifles ive seen have no option whatsoever for a scope, or sight of any type. why is this?

Hi JONN I happen to work at a gun store(civilian)and agree with Dale, all the guns we have at the shop indeed have intrigual scope mounts,or have been drilled and tapped for scope mounts. The reason no scope is present on most mid bores and biggeris because these guns are primarily intended for hunting dangerous game in dangeruos habitat, where a scope might fail and the hunter may get mauled or eaten. Iron sights(usually flip ups with more than one rear sight to accomidate several distances. Personally I own a Ruger 77 MK2 in .338 and like their scope rings very much Kudos to RUGER . This rifle has printed .25MOA 3shot groups several times. Also this weapon has never malfunctioned 1 time. If you are considering Ruger Know too Ruger is known for ,either you get a good one or you get a bad one. whew !! Long winded but hope this answers ????? Whats the question?

In a nutshell, .338 and "ineffective" don't belong in the same title...Dale

John, please explain some more your question. Perhaps since I am new here (first time and am enjoying it) I don't comprehend your question about no options for a scope or sights on a civilian .338 rifle. By civilian I would assume that something like a Winchester Model 70 in .338 Win Mag is what you're refering too? By a great measure most modern centerfire bolt guns manufactured today indeed do not possess iron sights. They do, however, have provisions (drilled and tapped holes) for mounting scope bases/rings/scope. This would be the norm for all modern, big game oriented rifles. Some manufactures have, and maybe still do, offer certain package combinations including a scope. But, I believe a scope is a highly personal thing and one wants to pick the right one, much like finding the right wife! My Model 70, stainless classic in .338 Win Mag does lack the iron sights, which I intend to have installed soon. As many times as I've fallen on the mountain side in the snow it would be nice to still have a usefull weapon should I knock it out. The Leupold scope has been hardy though and hasn't let me down.
