The wild passions and disordered perceptions of the mad narrator create the elements of the gothic. Perceptions of reality beyond the normal, exagerrated fascination with fear, shadows, menace and obsession. No actual supernatural, but the madman's conscience creates delusions that perform the duty very well(the old man's "evil eye", the heart beat) the dual obsession with organs of sight and sound heightened to an agonizing degree. Brutal murder, self-inflicted mental torture.

Some examples of madness are;the fact that he plans this eight days in advance. Another example is the fact that the murderer thinks he hears the old man's heart beat but the heart beat is in fact his own. The man in this story is a psycopathic lunitic but we enjoy reading about the people who have more problems than we do. The world we live in now is exciting but we love to read about the people who we ourselves are afraid of!!!!!!
