Does anybody here know about how many pounds of frozen meat you could expect from a 1200 lb steer? That is final weight that goes into the freezer. We have an opportunity to buy some nice grass fed beef, but we don't know if we want a half or a quarter. It will depend on the amount of meat that we will actually get.

Bob, you should get about 250 to 300 pounds of meat from a half.

Yup. :-)I was just researching this the other day. Obviously there are many factors involved. But seems that dressing percentage generally runs 50-60%, 60 being high.
Here is one site explaining...but you can just do a search; Beef Cattle dressing percentages

How much are you paying carcass weight per pound if you don't mind me asking?

We are supposed to be paying $1.60/lb, hanging weight. This includes all processing and freezing of the meat.Everywhere I look I get different numbers for how much beef to expect from a hanging carcass. It is really frustrating to us. I guess what I need is the percentage of weight, that will go into my freezer, from a beef cow.
There are many variables as to what the percentage will be, but I just want to be sure before we will buy a side of beef and then find out it is a lot more than we could have gotten it for somewhere else.
Thanks for the input. I appreciate it very much.
