OK. Silverman's biography discusses some of Poe's luckless habits. Mainly in college he got into debt more by his lack ofluck and skill than addiction to gambling, though he he did have an addiction to alcohol. One episode in later life has the poverty stricken Poe putting up one his best books for cash. Naturally he lost, which seemed to be his "problem" along with other badly timed rash behavior.
