Can I every remarry?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

When I got married, thru the catholic church, i was already pregnant (just that it wasn't noticable). I felt at the moment that I didn't really love the person, but I had to give a chance. It didn't last, we made it to almost 3 years, many fights, many therapy sessions. We finally ended in divorce after a very violent argument which led in him almost killing me. My daughter was 2 yrs old when we divorced, and now sees her father once or twice a year. And I have no communication with him. Now, I wonder if I ever begin dating again, can I ever remarry thru the Catholic Church.

Hello, Melissa.
Please do not begin dating yet. You need to speak to your pastor as soon as possible, asking him to help you begin the process of seeking a Declaration of Nullity.

A Catholic Church court (called a marriage tribunal) will considers all the written testimony concerning your case and will determine whether or not you and your husband were genuinely, validly married, in the eyes of God, on the wedding day.

If you were not married, you will be free to date and perhaps get married for the first time in your life. (Don't worry, if your prior "union" is declared null and void, that will have no effect on the legitimacy of your daughter.)

God bless you.
John
