MEXICO CITY, Mexico (Reuters) -- A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's coast in the Gulf of California on Thursday, but no injuries or damages were reported, officials said.

The quake occurred at 12:08 p.m. EDT (1608 GMT), with the epicenter located in the Pacific Ocean 125 miles (200 km) southeast of the beach resort Cabo San Lucas at the tip of the Baja California peninsula, the Mexican seismology service said on its Web site.

That magnitude earthquake is capable of causing significant damage in a populated area. Since the epicenter was located at sea, however, the quake was felt only lightly in the surrounding states and as far as Mazatlan 125 miles (200 km) to the northeast, said Fernando Romero an official at the local civil protection agency.

"Things hanging in some homes fell down, paintings and clocks, but nothing more," he said.
